Plastic Bag Ban
Under new laws, South Australia, Northern Territory and ACT retailers can no longer supply lightweight, single use, non-biodegradable plastic bags. The ban prevents retailers from selling or giving away plastic bags less than 35 microns thick. These are commonly known as checkout style plastic bags. Even if bags have 100% degradable printed on them they will still be banned as degradable is different to biodegradable. Biodegradable bags must comply with Australian Standard AS4736-2006.
Bags that can be used are:
Non Woven reusable "green bag"
Heavy retail bag >35 microns. Eg Boutique style bags and thick plastic bags that can be reused
Biodegradable bags that comply with Australian Standard AS4736-2006. Must biodegrade within 180 days under industrial composting conditions.
